Chris Avinash

In the late ‘90s, Angel Dust (the band, not the drug) took the Indian rock scene by storm. There were no record deals, no sponsorships and very little money. But there was passion - and, a love for original music that unites musicians and their audience.
Twelve years since, Bangalore-based music producer-composer-artiste-impresario (and Angel Dust front man) Chris Avinash presents a platform for artistes who dare to voice a sound of their own - Christortion, the studio.

Rewind to the summer of ’89. A gangly 15 year old Chris walked the neighbours’ dog (or vice versa) and bought his first guitar - for the princely sum of Rs 173! He taught himself how to play and then led some of the best Indian rock bands, directed a 76 piece choir of schoolgirls in a musical, starred in a Tim Supple production, started an independent recording studio – but continues to be walked by a dog(Junior, his Great Dane). And, somewhere in between he got an MBA too. The result: a good head for business coupled with great musical talent.
His journey as an entertainer has treaded every facet of the stage.

Spotlight
Paving its own path in the rockscapes of young India, Angel Dust won Rocktaves (BITS Pilani), Strawberry Fields (NLS Bangalore) and Mood Indigo (IIT Powai) among many prestigious competitions between 1996 and 2002. Chris’s compositions, lyrics and guitar leads were the backbone of bands like Chromatix, Document:Done, S.T.O.M.P, Gudbud Narayan and the Avril Quadros Band. Document:Done was, in fact, the first ‘corporate band’ of its kind, formed when a few talented colleagues at a dotcom company got together in the office balcony, jammed and created magic. They went on to win Radio City Live.

Backstage
Countless encores later, it was time to give budding talent the chance to do the same – and thus was born Wishbone Music. From conceptualizing to bringing music festivals like U-Rock and Rockarama to life, this Chris Avinash venture became synonymous with high-adrenaline Live Acts. He pioneered the concept of corporate bands with TouchBass (a battle of dotcom bands), did Rockathon - a five city tour with a Swiss metal act and delighted audiences with countless tribute concerts.

Curiosity led him to theatre. He assisted the likes of Dr Ashley William (The Jungle Book) and Mallika Prasad (Static Signals), among others. 2006 saw him singing, acting and striking Kalarippayattu poses in acclaimed director Tim Supple’s Postcards from God. A year later, Chris composed music for and directed a 76 piece choir, 70 dancers and 23 actors in Life – a Miracle, a musical to celebrate the Golden Jubilee of Stella Maris Girls School. The background score for G&P Dancentertainment’s Salaam Bollywood is his latest work in theatre.

Backstage
With over a decade’s experience in the music industry as a performer, composer and producer, in 2008 he unveiled Christortion – an independent recording studio where he mixes, masters, records and promotes artistes whose drive and talent capture his imagination. Started in May 2008, it has already produced two artistes and their debut albums, backed by A-list sessions musicians. For Christortion, the journey has only just begun.

Chris was commissioned to and has successfully set up a state of the art recording studio for St Josephs College of Arts and Science. He is currently overseeing the sound and light installation and assisting with the entertainment design for Kyra Theater. A performing arts venue which combines fine dining and entertainment, it’s the biggest if not the first of its kind in Bangalore.

Christortion

It’s more than just state-of-the-art equipment and that it offers. Chris brings out the best in you – whatever your wavelength. His experience in the industry, whether the nascent rock circuit or the Kannada film fraternity, makes him a great sounding board too. Add to that an enviable PR network and the album you cut with him is hard to ignore.

Beyond a studio, Christortion is the composer’s workshop – where he plays and experiments, when inspiration strikes – be it a rock anthem, a film song, a musical or a song for the soul.

As the front man of bands like Angel Dust, Document:Done, Chromatix and S.T.O.M.P, Chris has composed music and penned lyrics for songs that transcend genres, seamlessly mixing eastern and western influences. One of his early compositions Technical Specifications, a fusion of rock and Carnatic sounds, won the best original composition in IIT’s Mood Indigo (1999).

Scores for theatre productions and full-fledged musicals is another facet of his repertoire of compositions which include Life- A Miracle for Stella Maris Girls School, Vijay Nair’s Meeting Mating and GP’s Dancentertainment’s Salaam Bollywood.

As of now, composing tracks for artistes produced by Christortion is keeping him more than busy.

Live
Lights Sound Action!

As Wishbone Music, Chris has conceptualized, marketed, organized and executed a range of music events.

While some like U Rock and Rockarama were platforms for college and semi-professional bands, he pioneered the concept of corporate bands with TouchBass. IT Professionals, Bankers, Engineers etc celebrated their labour of love (music) every May Day at TouchBass for four successful years. And then there was Infy Idols – from 250 aspiring singers to one idol, Chris organized everything from the judging parameters and accompanying band to sound and production. He connected with musicians around the globe and brought Prakesh, a Swiss metal outfit, to India. The result was Rockathon, a five-city Prakesh-Angel Dust tour - a resounding success.

Some of his most memorable concerts include The Pink Floyd Night featuring Angel Dust and the Baldwin Girls Choir in 2002 and Down MG Road (with Document:Done) - a celebration of Gandhi Jayanti with music, brotherhood and peace.

A few unforgettable events.
